January Garnet Birthstone Gifts

The history of birthstones dates back to ancient times, with origins rooted in the biblical era. The concept is believed to have started with the Breastplate of Aaron, described in the Book of Exodus, which was adorned with twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel. Over time, these stones became associated with the twelve months of the year and the zodiac signs. In the first few centuries AD, scholars began to link specific stones with particular months, encouraging people to wear the corresponding gem throughout each month for protection and good fortune. The modern list of birthstones, however, was standardised in 1912 by the American National Retail Jewellers Association (now known as Jewellers of America), blending traditional and contemporary gems to create the list we commonly use today.
